1.MORAL OBLIGATION , ADVISABILITY , DESIRABILITY

  • used to advise people including oneself to do things

  • to tell them they have a duty to do smth.

  • to inquire about one’s duties

e.g. what time ought you to come? Ought she to warn him?

( ought to + simp. INF -- future e.g. You ought to go there next week.

+ cont. INF -- present e.g. You ought to be reading at the moment.

+ perf. INF + -- a desirable action wasn’t fulfilled

e.g. You ought to have chosen a more suitable time to tell me the news.

Ought not + perf. INF – an udesirable action was fulfilled.

e.g. You oughtn’t to have told him. (+ always, never , really)


Special Uses

You ought to know (better) – тебе полагается это знать

You ought to be ashamed of yourself – Стыдись!

He ought to know – Уж он то знает.
